Normandy

Hotel Mainotel - Fougeres - Normandy
"One day the capricious river couesnon put the mont into Normandy" Victor Hugo
28 min from Fougères, lies the Mont St Michel the eighth wonder of the world with its fortress walls, cloisters and crowning abbey.
Other things to look out for include :
- Rooves covered in chestnut wood tiles
- Craftsmen's shop signs restored in true XIVth and XVth century styles
- The church of Saint Pierre, less well known but equally interresting
- The ramparts, and after high-tide, the formation of quicksands
7 rivers flow into the bay of Mont St Michel and during the spring-tides the sea retreats 22 km out into.
Brittany

Only 35 min from Fougères, Rennes, the capital of Brittany as some very fine architecture. The theatre, parliament buildings and the old city centre are well worth visiting.

Fougères

Start from the top of the public gardens witch you enter between the church of St Léonard and the "Mairie" of Fougeres.
As you walk down through the gardens you get a wonderful birds-eye view of the castle. Fougeres, the largest medieval fortress in Europe stands in a valley and was once protected by the surrounding swamps.

Continue down through the gardens to the foot of the castle walls and the place du Marchix. Here you will find the ancient public washing troughs and to beautifully restored XIth century hotel restaurant cafes.
In times gone by the cafe-restaurants of the hotels were on the ground floor and travellers slept in dormitories on the three upper floors.
As you leave the place du Marchix in the direction of the castle, on your left stands the church of St Sulpice (little Notre Dame of Paris) with its outstanding gargoyles. You can still see traces of the church's romanesque origins but the existing building is in gothic and flamboyant styles.
Inside the church you will be impressed by the high altar which is entierely decorated in gold leaf, some very fine italian paintings of the XVII and XVIII centuries, and the panelling of the walls in Hungarian oak over an inch thick. The stained glass windows are of very high quality.
There is also representation of the Virgin Mary which is unique in that she is offering here breast to the Infant Jesus.
